Richard and Amanda Haddock recently attended the 10th anniversary meeting for the Pacific Pediatric Neuro Oncology Consortia (PNOC) in San Francisco. Nobel Prize winner Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn gave a very informative keynote address on telomeres in pediatric neuro oncology. The meeting was filled with scientific presentations from clinicians and researchers who are active members of the consortia. All are committed to sharing their data with the Children’s Brain Tumor Network (CBTN) in as close to real-time as possible, and are increasingly looking for ways to translate what they learn from the labs back into the clinic.

Dr. Javad Nazarian, Dr. Sabine Mueller, and Dr. Carl Koschman

Amanda and Richard had the opportunity to view the state-of-the-art facilities available to UCSF patients, including an interoperative MRI machine.

They also took advantage of the proximity to visit Project Treehouse at University of California, Santa Cruz. Project Treehouse focuses on RNA and helping young scientists harness its potential for cancer cures. There are some projects in the works with these talented researchers, so stay tuned for more on that in the coming months. View more photos from the symposium here.
